We need your support!Welcome to the website of the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre of Montreal (JCCCM). Formally established as a non-profit, community organization in 1975, the JCCCM serves as a meeting point for the Japanese Canadian community as well as for all those interested in Japanese culture in the Greater Montreal Area. In particular, the Centre provides a focal point where the unique history and cultural heritage of the Montreal Japanese Canadian community can be sustained, promoted, and shared by all, irrespective of cultural background. With the changing demographic nature of the community, particularly the influx of immigration from Japan (from post-war to the present) as well as a large interest from individuals of non-Japanese heritage, the JCCCM also offers and supports a variety of cultural, educational, social, and recreational activities to promote and develop a spirit of mutual understanding, appreciation, and cooperation between all facets of our diverse community as well as with the general public.

Come join us at Kodomo Club with your little ones! It’s an opportunity for Japanese-speaking families with pre-school aged children to socialize and to exchange various information concerning raising children in Montreal. Kaiwa is back in-person, on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month, from 1:30 – 3:30pm. Open to JCCCM members only. Limited space, no charge – sign up required. All Nikkei seniors are welcomed. Freshly made Japanese sweets and rice dish are available for takeout or eat-in. No reservation necessary.

＜JAPANESE COMMUNITY CHORUS (JC CHORUS) “UtaOh Kai”: April 25 (Thursday) 12:45~13:30＞

Do you sometimes feel nostalgic for Japanese songs or feel like you want to sing in Japanese? No matter your experience, age or gender, anyone can enjoy singing with live piano accompaniment instead of karaoke. Let’s sing Japanese songs that everyone knows, such as seasonal songs, nursery rhymes, and local folk songs, in Japanese. Répertoire of Automne session (Octobre/Novembre) « Akatonbo » « Yuyake koyake » « Okaasan » « Sato no Autumn », etc. Piano accompaniment: Kanae Nobori. Registration needed.

<Team Orange Lunch & Linedancing Circle : Thursday, May 23、noon – 3 pm>

Line dancing and lunch event by Team Orange Montreal, supported by the JCCCM. Team Orange is a group promoting activity and wellness in our seniors. Exercising is another essential ingredient for healthy living. We will be serving lunch at 12:00, and dance away afterwards. Our instructor will be Terry Yasunaka. <LIBRARY news>

The Library opens on Wednesday and Sunday from 1pm to 4 pm and Thursday from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm. Please note that there is no longer a separate membership fee for Library users. Anyone wishing to borrow books must become a JCCCM member. We have a small selection of Japanese books (novels, magazines, etc.) for sale (CASH ONLY).

In May 2022, the government of British Columbia acknowledged the historical wrongs perpetuated against Japanese-Canadians in BC during the 1940’s, and made a pledge to support a $100 million legacy initiatives package recommended by the NAJC BC Redress Project, and administered by the JC Legacies Society. The Japanese Canadian Legacy Monument Database team led by University of Victoria’s Michael Abe is developing the list of names of Japanese Canadians living in coastal BC prior to the forced uprooting to be preserved on a monument in Victoria, BC. <A MESSAGE FROM NAJC-QC>

A crew of Montreal-based multigenerational Nikkei are rebuilding the Quebec chapter of the National Association of Japanese Canadians (NAJC-QC). Although we have been dormant for many years, we are inheriting a legacy built by powerfully engaged community leaders such as Rei Nakashima, Jackie Stevens, and Alan Itakura. Moreover, the recently announced BC Redress initiative promises new opportunities to support Internment survivors and community-based activities across Canada.
With NAJC QC, an organization by and for Japanese Canadians, we aspire to support a proud, flourishing, and interconnected community which values the full range of experience of all Nikkei, and works towards justice for all.

Please help us build our mailing list and better understand the needs and interests of our local Japanese Canadian community by filling out this form and sharing it with friends and relatives. It should take no more than 5-10 minutes to complete.

Furthermore, if you or anyone you know is connected to Farnham, including relatives who were displaced there after WWII, please get in touch to support our community-led research to reconstruct this unique part of Japanese Canadian history in Quebec.
